Stringing beads is an activity so inherently human it's no surprise that we have been doing it since the Stone Age. What is a bead? Anything with a hole in it and small enough to wear can qualify as a bead. Webster's online dictionary defines beads as "a small piece of material pierced for threading on a string or wire."
Materials used for stringing include threads, yarns, metals, nylons, wire, monofilament, natural fibers from grasses, trees, silk, cotton, just to name a few. There's no end to what can be used to string on! Did you know scientists are looking at spider's thread to understand tensile strength? It's reputed to be stronger than steel of the same diameter. With today's technology we are able to pursue the favorite past time of bead stringing with a huge variety of strong and interesting materials.
